Sony Shows Off The Playstation 3
May 17th, 2005
Talk about stealing Microsoft thunder! It’s less than a week since the unveiling of the Xbox 360 and Sony have already hit back by showing off the new PS3 console.
The PS3 is a sleek, curved device that will look at home in the living room. We think it looks a little retro, almost like a prop from Space 1999 or other such 70s science fiction programming. It will be available in blacks, silver or white.
Sony have tried to score points over the Xbox 360 in terms of processor power. The much-hyped Cell processor is 35 times faster than the PS2 and twice as fast as the chip in the Xbox 360. Sony believe that the combination of the Cell processor and an Nvidia designed graphics chip will produce movie-quality graphics.
To enhance the graphics even further, PS3 supports full high definition display, with a resolution of 2Kx1K, which is far superior to PS2’s 720×486.
As well as DVDR/W and CD-R/RW the PS3 supports Blu-ray (could this be the stick that beats HD-DVD to death). There will be also a 2.5in hard drive attachment, a Memory Stick Duo, SD slots, Bluetooth support with up to seven wireless controllers and six USB system ports.
Ken Kutaragi, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said that PS3 ‘will accelerate the arrival of a new era in computer entertainment’.
‘SCEI has continuously brought innovation to the world of computer entertainment, such as real-time 3D computer graphics on PlayStation and the world’s first 128-bit processor Emotion Engine for PlayStation 2. Empowered by the Cell processor with super computer like performance, a new age of PlayStation 3 is about to begin.’
The Xbox 360 suddenly seems like yesterday’s machine.
