16GB NAND Flash Is Here - Courtesy of Samsung

You can start dreaming of a day when you can throw away your fragile old hard drive and replace it with robust NAND Flash storage. Samsung has unveiled a 16GB high density NAND flash chip which for the first time could take the place of a hard disc drive in a notebook, albeit a low-end notebook.

However, it’s in the area of portable storage where the new chip will come into its own. “Memory is opening a bold new world in consumer electronics,” said Dr. Chang-Gyu Hwang, Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor business president and CEO, at a press conference in Seoul today. “With cards containing multiple 16Gb flash memory chips, you will be able to take your entire music and personal video libraries with you on one small portable device.”

An important factor of NAND flash is not only the large capacities that are now being developed, but also the economical power consumption - vital with portable devices.

“The future of NAND is setting the stage for an irreversible shift in the design of digital end products as NAND becomes the key storage medium for data in virtually any portable form,” Dr. Hwang said.

Samsung plans to start mass producing the 16Gb NAND flash memory chip in the second half of 2006.
