Apple Refunds Half the Price of Faulty iPod Batteries
June 3rd, 2005
If you were an early adopter of the Apple iPod, you may have been one of the unlucky many for whom the battery that would ‘last a lifetime’ actually lasted about 18 months before it either died, or could only hold a charge long enough to listen to one or two albums.
Two million units are thought to be affected and following a lawsuit launched by eight disgruntled owners, Apple has offered a $50 credit, usable in Apple stores (not iTunes).
The problem is that the replacement battery costs $99, so $50 falls a little short of making your iPod work once more. Of course, Apple has gambled on affected users having gone out and bought replacements already, or upgraded to a newer, bigger iPod, so the $49 difference won’t cause too much unrest.
Consumers who file a claim must have a receipt for the original purchase of their iPod which, considering that many will have been bought four years ago, will drastically reduce the amount of $50 vouchers that Apple will have to send out.
